In the comics, Steve Rogers often struggled financially, taking odd jobs such as comic book illustrator, teacher, etc. However, the Ultimates version states he is financially secure, since he was given sixty years of back pay by the Army for his time in suspended animation. The film version shows he remains employed as a government agent, like the 1960s-1970s comic version.
