When Union troops assault the Crater in the beginning, one of the banners they use is not like the others. This one is yellow with crossed cannons. This unit is the 14th New York Heavy Artillery and, like in the film, was the first to enter the breach. By 1864, General Ulysses S. Grant was ordering heavy artillery regiments out of guarding Washington D.C. to reinforce his army rather than wait for replacements. The heavy artillery regiments, while serving honorably, suffered heavy casualties.
