In the original script, there's an opening scene showing more of Edgar Deems and Old Fred. In it, the two are shown as close friends who meet up to trade livestock, but Deem's prized donkey is eaten by a graboid, setting up why Edgar climbed the electrical tower. This scene was actually filmed, but the studio thought it was too boring, and the filmmakers thought it revealed the mystery of the graboids too soon.
