After the success of Freddy vs. Jason (2003), Lionsgate wanted to make a horror crossover of their own using the Candyman and the one other lucrative figure they had the rights to at the time: the Leprechaun. When the idea was pitched to Tony Todd, he immediately shot the whole thing down, believing it to be too ridiculous a gimmick to work and disrespectful to a character as tragic as the Candyman.
