Michael Bay was not happy with the final look of Bad Boys II (2003), which was shot with spherical lenses in Super 35, and insisted on returning to shooting in Panavision anamorphic for this movie. For its extremely close insert shots - which otherwise might had to have been shot from further back with longer lenses, or shot in Super 35, due to spherical lenses being able to focus more closely - Bay had Panavision adapt several of their close-focus spherical lenses into anamorphic ones, which allowed him to focus as close as two inches away while still shooting anamorphic.
