On a vacation to Ghana, Static met an African superhero named Anansi, who was a spider-themed trickster hero. This character was based on West African folklore, where the spider is a trickster figure. Also, having Static meet a spider-based superhero was paying homage to Static's conception as a character, as one of the reasons Dwayne McDuffie wanted to create Static in the first place is because he was inspired by Marvel's early Spider-Man stories of a young self-made teenage superhero.
