Robotnik absorbing the power of the Master Emerald isn't actually the first time that ever happened. Sonic The Comic had a story arc where Robotnik absorbed the Emerald's energy to become a god. Unlike the film, he was able to toy with reality before Sonic defeated him with the aid of Knuckles and the Grey Emerald which nullified his powers and shrunk him to sub atomic particles.
