This movie parodies the story that the moon landings were faked by the government. It's used in the movie as an attempt to quell future generations' enthusiasm for space travel. Amazingly, real-life conspiracy theorists claim that Stanley Kubrick directed the television footage of the landings, using leftover props from 2001: Odissea nello spazio (1968), which is one of the inspirations for this movie.
