Sir Sean Connery was Jonathan Demme's first choice to play Dr. Hannibal Lecter, but he turned the part down. Connery did a similar thriller, called La giusta causa (1995), where Ed Harris played a serial killer. That movie was neither a critical, nor commercial smash like this movie.
