Despite the close relationship between Captain Janeway and Seven of Nine, it has been revealed by members of the cast that Kate Mulgrew had an antagonistic relationship towards the introduction of Seven, and to Jeri Ryan in particular. Mulgrew reportedly refused to allow Ryan bathroom breaks while shooting, because taking off Ryan's one-piece costume and putting it back on took too much time. Robert Beltran later stated that Mulgrew's abuse got so bad, that if he had been the recipient instead of Ryan and if Mulgrew had been a man, he probably would have taken a swing at her.
