The film introduces a new version of Julie Madison, Batman's first significant romantic interest. Madison first appeared in Detective Comics #31 (September 1939), created by the writer Gardner Fox and the co-artists Bob Kane and Sheldon Moldoff. She was introduced as a wealthy socialite and Bruce Wayne's fiancee, though she was mainly depicted as a damsel in distress. She was soon revealed to be a professional actress. She was written out of the series in 1941, as her career plans conflicted with Bruce's lazy lifestyle. Madison has been reintroduced several times since then, but she tends to be overshadowed by more colorful characters.
