The fact that Ed Harris, playing Christof, in real life is only twelve years older than Jim Carrey, playing Truman, presented some challenges to the make-up department at the behest of the producer and director. Otherwise, it would be impossible for a twelve-year-old Christof to be head of a corporation and have a newborn son legally adopted. So they took great pains to make Truman look younger with the collegiate-style, high-school age apparel and posturing, and Christof look older, with conservative clothing, wire-rimmed glasses, slow, contemplating movements plus special makeup. Otherwise, the suspension of disbelief would come into serious question.
