Prior to the release of the sequel, it was speculated among fans that the crawlers may have been a figment of Sarah's imagination, and that she actually killed all her friends as she gradually went insane. Director Neil Marshall acknowledged this theory as a possibility, and revealed that he removed a shot of a silhouetted crawler during Sarah's hospital hallucination, since it would have been too obviously suggesting that the crawlers were not real.
