Most actors auditioned for their roles by submitting videotapes of themselves performing a scene in Vietnam. Director Stanley Kubrick and the studio placed ads throughout the United States for young aspiring actors to send in audition tapes for the film. They received around 3,000, of which Kubrick personally watched about 800.
