This film contains several references to Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, also based on a Stephen King book. The short red cord jacket worn by Mort is reminiscent of that worn by Jack Torrance. Both men are writers. Both films contain a scene where the writer had repeatedly written the same words over and over.
