Most of the production was shot in the original Cinerama process using three strips of 35mm film. However, some sequences (most particularly any shots involving rear-projected backgrounds) were shot using Panavision's less cumbersome 70mm anamorphic Ultra-Panavision process. For Cinerama release prints, this footage had to be optically divided into the three 35mm strips for projection in Cinerama venues.
