Early test screenings were done while visual effects work was still mostly incomplete. The scenes were filled in with early visual effects work, or in many cases, simple storyboards. Audience feedback at this early stage was what convinced Harve Bennett to approach Leonard Nimoy about revising the ending to allow a potential return for Spock (for his part, Nimoy had already been having second thoughts).
