Following the events in the subsequent prequel film Star Wars: Episodio III - La vendetta dei Sith (2005), Palpatine's demise in this film can be attributed to the exact same thing that enabled him to take over the Republic and become Emperor. This was Anakin's/Vader's obsessive love and worry for his loved ones. In Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine turned Anakin Skywalker to the dark side of the force by playing on Anakin's fear of Padme dying during childbirth. Yet, in this film, Palpatine attempts to kill Luke Skywalker with force lightning, forgetting Anakin's/Vader's deep concern for the well-being of his loved ones, in this case his son, Luke. This led Anakin/Vader to step in, preventing Palpatine from destroying the Jedi and killing Luke by throwing Palpatine into the second Death Star's reactor.
