According to director David Fincher and writer Eric Roth, studio executives insisted that the timeline of F. Scott Fitzgerald's original story, which begins just prior to the Civil War and ends during the Jazz Age, be shifted forward to the 1960s in order to appeal to the Baby Boomer audience demographic. The assumption was that Boomer audiences would relate more to their own time period.
