On the Enterprise's first encounter with the Reliant, Admiral Kirk declares a yellow alert. Lieutenant Saavik immediately energizes the "defense fields", which are an entirely different system than the main deflector shields. No such "defense fields" are ever mentioned in any other Star Trek film or television series.
