As Angela and Scott reach the attic, they start a tape recorder that is set at half-speed, so they only hear a heavily distorted voice. By speeding up the playback of the film, the original recording can be heard: "It appears the spread will be impossible to contain. November (seventh?), something unexpected has happened. Our brothers in the east have come under suspicion...". The attic walls are full of articles mentioning a defector of a Doomsday cult talking about an 'Armageddon virus' stolen from a weapons lab, which already wiped out a South Pacific island. On the Blu-ray/DVD commentary, writer/director John Erick Dowdle and writer/executive producer Drew Dowdle explain the voice on the tape is from the "Thin Man", found in the attic in the final scene, played by Doug Jones. Jones had recorded an entire manifesto which was intended to play on the tape recorder, as to provide backstory. However, during editing, the filmmakers realized that giving too much information made the film less scary, so they decided to slow down the audio from the tape so that it would not be intelligible.
