Before beginning work on this film, Cate Blanchett did an uncredited voice-over on Stanley Kubrick's film Eyes Wide Shut. Although she was actually hired by Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman rather than Kubrick, this made her the fourth actor to appear in both a Kubrick film and an adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. Kubrick's film Barry Lyndon featured Andre Morell and Philip Stone; who later voiced Elrond and Theoden in Ralph Bakshi's film; and Michael Hordern, who voiced Gandalf in the BBC Radio drama. In the 1960s, the Beatles wanted to produce and appear in an adaptation, and they had hoped Kubrick would direct. Their Abbey Road Studios ended up being used to record the soundtrack and sound mix for these films.
