Some of the events of David Fincher's own career mirror those of Orson Welles during the period depicted in this film. Both men saw professional success at a very young age, both were noted for their confidence that bordered on arrogance, and both were involved in major public feuds with the most famous (and wealthy) media tycoons of their day: Welles with William Randolph Hearst during the making of Quarto potere (1941), and Fincher with Rupert Murdoch during the release of Fight Club (1999), when Murdoch would call out the film by name when disavowing the violence depicted in films from 20th Century Fox - which Murdoch himself owned. Fincher would also echo Quarto potere (1941), when he made The Social Network (2010) about Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg who was also one of the richest Americans in the world at the time of its release. Like Kane, The Social Network also utilized multiple perspectives to tell the story of its central character.
