James Gray and his brother Ed's relationship became great about a year or two after the movie takes place. There was a scene that he wrote where the brothers reconcile toward the end, based on something that happened in real life where his brother really looked out for him. The scene was even filmed, but had to be cut because he felt the film worked better without it.
