Michael Ende, the author of the book, was unhappy with this adaption of his story, and refused to have his name placed in the opening credits (his name still appears in the ending credits). During production, he strongly disagreed with how the film deviated from the source material. He later requested a change of the film's title or production halted altogether. After the studio declined both requests, he filed a lawsuit and ultimately lost.
