The Steps of Cirith Ungol were crafted out of polystyrene, and proved to be a difficult set on which Sean Astin, Elijah Wood, and Andy Serkis had to film. The steps were so steep and fragile that they sometimes broke, and because the steps were sprayed down with water, Astin and Wood sometimes got their Hobbit feet stuck to the steps, and had to be pulled off.
