The original concept for Blossom was supposed to be an updated example of Catcher in the Rye. Having similarities between the two, Blossom is an updated version of Phoebe Caulfield; and both Joey and Anthony are supposed to be modern iterations of the iconic Holden Caulfield. NBC at the time told Don Reo that they did not want to focus on the boys and they wanted to focus on the girl; since that would make it more unique.
