Early on in development, when Stanley Kubrick planned to do Eyes Wide Shut (1999) as a comedy, he considered casting the then-popular Woody Allen, because he admired Allen's work. Then he considered casting the comedian Steve Martin, because he had enjoyed Lo straccione (1979)). Super-star Harrison Ford was considered for the lead at one point, as was later the married star couple Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger. Kubrick's different casting ideas over the years reflect a consistent wish to cast popular stars for this rather difficult material, but they also show, that his concept shifted from comedy to drama.
