The roles of Bastian, Atreyu and the Child-like Empress were recast for La storia infinita 2 (1990) due to the ages of Barret Oliver, Noah Hathaway and Tami Stronach who were all in their late teens in 1989. Stronach wouldn't have returned even if asked because she didn't sign on for the sequels. She wasn't interested in acting. Instead she went into dance and theater. Jonathan Brandis, Kenny Morrison, and Alexandra Johnes assumed the roles. Jason James Richter and Julie Cox took over the roles of Bastian and the Empress respectively in La storia infinita 3 (1994), but, Atreyu did not return for the third film.
