It's never explained how Angel Eyes suddenly comes to be a sergeant in the union army, although in "For a Few Dollars More" it's suggested that Colonel Mortimer earned his rank in the military, most probably the Civil War. His sudden appearing and disappearing from the prison camp here would not be unheard of considering how desperately the two sides of the war needed able-bodied soldiers and officer material.
