Producer and director Chris Columbus has stated in interviews that he was disappointed with the visual effects in this movie, saying that they were "rushed" and "never up to anyone's standards", and sought to improve them for Harry Potter e la camera dei segreti (2002). This did not, however, prevent this movie from being nominated for a BAFTA award for "Best Visual Effects".
