In the backstory for 1994 original version, Scar's scar is the result of an attacking herd of buffaloes from which Mufasa rescued him. In this version, it is heavily implied that the injury was actually given to him by Mufasa when Scar challenged him. This makes the rivalry between brothers more personal, though less realistic - among real lions, brothers work together to defend their pride from outsiders.
