Director Sam Wood shot the famous final speech at Yankee Stadium, where Lou Gehrig had made it. Soon afterwards, the movie ends with Lou disappearing into darkness behind the dugout. The studio wasn't content with that, and wanted to "corn up" the ending by adding a final kiss between Gehrig and his wife. Wood said he 'told them what I thought and got the ending back again'.
