The actual site of Hearst Castle, like Kane's palace, is high atop a hill. It overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Down at the base of the hilltop fortress is a tiny oceanfront hamlet, the village of San Simeon. Hearst built a landing there for the supply ships that would bring in construction materials, and for his future yachting guests. The scene where Kane and his wife drive down to the beach for a picnic party with their guests may well be a nod to this.
