When Post was developing a competing product for Kellogg's Rice Krispies, they created a chocolate version and arranged with Hanna-Barbera to have The Flinstones as their mascot and gave the product the stone-age-sounding name of Cocoa Pebbles. The following year they developed a fruit flavored version and gave it the name Fruity Pebbles.
