There is a theory as to how the workers are picked as well as the players: whoever picks the blue ddakji tile during the initial game with the recruiter is selected and approached as a player; whoever picks the red ddakji tile is recruited as a worker in the games. However this was disproven as you can briefly see a player in sandals and white socks throwing a red ddakji in the recruitment footage shown by the guards before the first game.
