The references to Dante's Divine Comedy are many: the main character is named Dan T. (Dante), there are characters named Virgil and Beatriz (Beatrice), Dante's guides, as well as The Circle (a reference to the Circles of Hell), and Kharon/Charon, the ferryman in Hell.
