It's ironic that the title of the opening credits song by Queen is called "Princes of the Universe". In the non-canon sequel Highlander II - Il ritorno (1991) which takes place 39 years later, Connor McLeod, Ramirez and the immortals are revealed to be extra terrestrials from a planet called Zeist and that McLeod and Ramirez were both banished from Zeist to Earth for leading a rebellion against the planet's cruel ruler General Katana. McLeod being a alien from outer space was disregarded in the 3rd movie.
