The series is the long-awaited prequel to Director David Wain's cult hit Wet Hot American Summer (2001), which failed at the box-office upon release in 2001. Wain had been attempting to follow up the film with a television sequel for years, before finally reaching a deal with Netflix in 2014, shortly after the streaming service's success with the fourth season of Arrested Development - Ti presento i miei (2003).
