Eight years after this movie came out, many of the people involved with making it were also instrumental in creating one of the most notorious flops in Broadway musical history: "Carrie," a musical adaptation of Stephen King's bestselling 1970s horror novel of the same name. (Carrie, which closed after scathing reviews, 16 previews, and only 5 official performances, is still so emblematic of Broadway failure that the authoritative book on the history of flop musicals, by Ken Mandlebaum, is titled "Not Since Carrie: Forty Years of Broadway Musical Flops.") Fame alumni who participated in the staging of Carrie include: Debbie Allen (Lydia in Fame), who was the show's choreographer; Gene Anthony Ray (Leroy) who played Billy (the role John Travolta played in the movie of Carrie); and Michael Gore, who wrote the music for both. This was Ray's only Broadway role. The musical has experienced something of a cult resurgence, and revivals have been staged off-Broadway and in LA and London.
