Among the changes that the studio demanded to the initial cuts were a more streamlined opening act, and the insertion of title cards so that audiences could keep some track of the time that elapsed. Director Robert Eggers commented that "I think I've delivered the most entertaining version. The most entertaining version is not necessarily something I'm usually striving for. But it was here, you know, and it happened." Director Alfonso Cuarón, who was a fan of Eggers' The Witch (2015), also approved of the final cut.
