Byron Burton and John Ottman worked on a screenplay called X-Men: Fear the Beast as a follow-up to X-Men: Apocalisse (2016). It would have centered around the character Hank/Beast, though other X-Men characters would appear in smaller roles. Simon Kinberg rejected the script as he was already working on Dark Phoenix.
