The USS Alabama is a real Ohio Class nuclear sub commissioned in 1985 and is still in service as of 2018. USN Captain Skip Beard, who commanded the Alabama on five patrols from 1986 to 1989, served as a technical adviser for the film. He also makes a silent cameo as the bald headed Board of Inquiry member seated to right of Jason Robards during the "finding of facts" scene at the end of the film.
