Although the film was generally considered to be an unmitigated disaster, it was however instrumental in cementing a working relationship between David Lynch, actor Kyle MacLachlan and producer Dino De Laurentiis. The latter was only too happy to bankroll Lynch's next film, an oddball mystery thriller called Velluto blu (1986) which no studio was prepared to touch.
