Kelso expresses surprise that Willams has a copy of his book, saying that it, "didn't exactly fly off the shelves." The book bears the title "Before The Fall". This is an invention of the story. Although author John Berendt (of whom Kelso is an alter ego) did write a number of other books, none bore that title.As for Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, the book did indeed fly off the shelves, spending 216 weeks on the New York Times Best-Seller list, which remains the longest-standing book on that very impressive list. It would go on to win the 1995 Boeke Prize and was one of the finalists for the 1995 Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction.
