As the crew and audiences liked the character of Dr. Okun so much, Dean Devlin and Brent Spiner have gone on record to say that his character was only in a coma, when he appeared to be dead. A brief shot of Major Mitchell saying Okun is dead was shot but deleted, with the idea that Okun could be brought back in a sequel. This finally came to pass in Independence Day - Rigenerazione (2016).
