While developing the film's screenplay, screenwriter Rolf de heer said he began to get a strong sense of what the film should be, "and it didn't involve a lot of talking". He said: "Cinema doesn't necessarily need a lot of dialogue. If there's a particular sort of story that's told in a particular way, and that's really what I wanted, it has a sparse feel to it."
