Charlie Sheen personally advocated for Brett Butler to have a recurring role because both of them had addiction issues as well as being let go of two series which were both created by Chuck Lorre. After her addiction issues were causing havoc ABC canceled Butler's sitcom Grace Under Fire (1993) mid-season in 1998 and Sheen was fired because of his addiction issues from Two and a Half Men (2003) and replaces by Ashton Kutcher. Butler had pretty much remained dormant since the cancellation of her show fourteen years earlier but feeling sympathy for her own personal struggles Sheen wanted her on the series and it marked a small comeback for the comedic actress.
