The character of Leonard "Leo" Merks (Robert Davi) was based on real-life Gambino crime family captain Anthony Gaggi, who supervised the criminal activities of Roy Demeo's crew. Although depicted in the film as being murdered by Richard Kuklinski, in real life Gaggi died in 1988 of a heart attack while in jail.
