Director Joel Schumacher has confirmed the story that Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones didn't get along is very true. The director told Vulture that while working with Jones on Il cliente (1994) was wonderful, the actor was really mean to his co-star on this film. According to Carrey, he went to Jones one day and asked "Hey Tommy, how you're doin'?". Jones instantly turned white and started shaking, then he got up and hugged Carrey, saying "I hate you. I really don't like you." When Carrey asked why he was doing it, Jones responded "I cannot sanction your buffoonery."
